The project, which is carried out with the inputs of an expert from the US, aims to foster the new generation of Hungarian youth activists and to promote the culture of peaceful dialogue among Hungarian youth. The target group is youth aged between 18 and 24, primarily from North-East Hungary. In the context of the increasing attempts to restrict civil society’s freedom to promote human rights and democratic values and dismantle democratic checks and balances, youth civil participation methods and platforms are crucial in the long-term defense of individual freedoms, democracy, and rule of law. The project was launched in October 2019.

In the framework of the project, a seminar started in the Spring of 2020 with a group of 17 participants in Miskolc. Due to the extraordinary circumstances given by the COVID-19, the seminar continued in September 2020. We discussed with the group of bright, enthusiastic, and inspiring young participants questions like: What can we learn from past authoritarian, Nazi, and communist regimes? How do we commemorate the victims? What did we gain by the change of regime? Why are human rights and freedoms important? Why do we need to defend them?

In the framework of the project, a three-day retreat will be organized in 2021.

The project is funded by the Department of State of the United States of America, and the findings of the seminar were channeled into the University of Minnesota Human Rights Lab.
